The steam and heat in pelletizing process can make starch gelatinization and thus generate cohesiveness, which can help different feed ingredients bind together. Therefore the more starch, the better cohesiveness. Starch from different sources has different cohesiveness. The cohesiveness of starch in wheat and barley is stronger than that in corn. Due to little fat content, soybean meal has good cohesiveness.
When making piglet feed pellets by feed pellet machine, if milk powder, whey powder, sugar or glucose is contained in the feed ingredients, feed material will have good cohesiveness too.

Moisture content, temperature and steam pressure

Moisture content and temperature are the necessary conditions and important factors for starch gelatinization and cohesiveness. If the moisture content of feed ingredients is higher than 8-10%, the hardness is increased. In a general way, the supply volume of steam is 3-6% of the supply volume of feed material. In this way, the total moisture content can be 16-17%.
If the pelletizing temperature of feed pellet machine is too low, the starch gelatinization is not sufficient so lower the pelletizing effect; if the temperature is too high, the nutrient especially vitamin will loss seriously. The requirement of temperature is not higher than 88 ℃. Temperature can ranges from 82 ℃ to 88 ℃ according to the pellet formation status and the moisture content of feed pellets after cooling. If the pellet formation status is poor and the moisture content is high, temperature can be set higher.

Steam pressure is directly related to moisture content and pelleting temperature; the proper steam pressure will generate good pelleting effect. Commonly, steam pressure is controlled between 394 KPa and 490 KPa. If the steam pressure is high, the supply volume of steam is big and temperature is high too.

If adopting cold pressing, that is to say, the feed materials are pressed directly form feed pellet mill die to form feed pellets without steam, the finished feed pellets are called raw feed pellets.
